                                               MRSA

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

What is MRSA?

The increasing prevalence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hospitals and the community is a direct result of the over-use of prescription antibiotics. MRSA is considered a “super-bug” and is showing increasing resistance to topical and oral antibiotics. Dr. Reis treats MRSA successfully without the use of antibiotics by implementing effective therapies that are used to kill the bacteria, while strengthening the individuals’ immune system to prevent future infections and complications.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of MRSA can vary from person to person.  Some common presentations include:

1.  Small red pimple or boil that continues to occur

2.  Painful swelling or abscess on the skin

3.  Sore Throat - often mistaken for strep throat

4.  Can lead to more life threatening infections, such as pneumonia, bone infections and heart infections if left untreated properly.

It is important to diagnose and treat MRSA in its early stages because as it progresses, it becomes increasingly more difficult to treat.

How can it be treated?

First is prevention!  Avoid taking unnecessary antibiotics for viral infections such as the flu and common cold.  Antibiotics kill only bacteria and are powerless over viral infections.

Also, avoid meat that has been treated with antibiotics. There is some research suggesting ingesting antibiotics in our food can increase bacterial resistance and create more super bugs

Conventionally, MRSA is treated with courses of topical and oral antibiotics.  This does not cure MRSA but only atempts to stop the progression.  The major concern with this practice is that it is continuing to create more resistance and it fails to address our body's own ability to fight infection.

Naturopathically, MRSA is treated by giving strong oral and topical natural antibiotics that are pharmaceutical grade - capable of killing the bacteria like conventional antibiotics- without creating resistance.  In addition, it is crucial that the immune system is strengthened so that the body can also fight the infection.  Dr. Reis employs several strong therapies to help her patients fight MRSA effectively and safely.
